چکیده

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is an indolamine hormone produced by the pineal gland that works to regulate sleep/wake cycles and activity rhythms. The effects of melatonin in metabolism are far from understood. Melatonin was injected into the fiddler crab, Uea pugilator, to investigate the effects of melatonin on hemolymph glucose and lactate levels. Following injection at t=O, hemolymph samples were collected at t=O.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 5.0 hours. Melatonin caused a decrease in the stress response to injection and also caused delayed hyperglycemia. Melatonin-injected crabs also retained the glucose and lactate rhythymicity when compared to saline-injected crabs. Glucose and lactate rhythms followed the same pattern indicating Lhat the cycles are coupled. Also, melatonin was synthesized using tbe Fischer Indole synthesis and characterized using HINMR. The synthetic melatonin demonstrated biological activity when injected into the crabs as when compared to pure melatonin on the effects on glucose and lactate concentrations. Overall. melatonin influences both glucose metabolism and the production of lactate.

Fiddler crabs (Uca spp.) as model hosts for laboratory infections of Hematodinium perezi.

The parasitic dinoflagellate, Hematodinium perezi, negatively impacts the commercially important blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. The parasite is a host generalist, but it has not been reported from littoral fiddler crabs living within a few meters of habitat known to harbor infected blue crabs. In the first study, populations of three species of fiddler crab were screened for natural infections...

Fiddler Crab Exercise: the Energetic Cost of Running Sideways

The fiddler crab, Uca pugilator, used sideways octapedal locomotion during 15 min of treadmill exercise. At each velocity tested (0-06, 0-11 and O'^kmh") , oxygen consumption (V02) showed only a modest, sluggish elevation; a 'steady-state' was never attained. The highest V02 recorded, O-ZZmlOzg"^", was 4-4 times the resting rate. Net whole body lactate (WBL) was found to increase at a constant ...

Hemigrapsus sanguineus in Long Island salt marshes: experimental evaluation of the interactions between an invasive crab and resident ecosystem engineers

The invasive Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, has recently been observed occupying salt marshes, a novel environment for this crab species. As it invades this new habitat, it is likely to interact with a number of important salt marsh species. To understand the potential effects of H. sanguineus on this ecosystem, interactions between this invasive crab and important salt marsh ecosyst...
